❓ Frequently Asked Questions

🐶 What kind of training methods do you use?

My dog training focuses on using positive reinforcement based on the science of operant conditioning - no shock collars, prong collars, or punishment-based methods. My training is science-backed and focused on building trust and clear communication between you and your dog. All training is performed in compliance with the CCPDT Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.

Yes! I offer customized puppy training sessions in your home. We cover crate training, potty training, socialization, nipping, and early obedience so your puppy gets off to the best possible start.

🐕 Do you offer puppy training in Omaha?

💬 Why should I train with you instead of a larger company, pet store or franchise trainer?

First off, I believe training should be FUN!

I’m passionate about building real relationships with the people and dogs I work with, and doing everything I can to support your goals. I'm currently working toward my CPDT certification (Certified Professional Dog Trainer), which I expect to complete by September 2025. That means you’ll get training that’s rooted in science, focused on results, and guided by a strong code of ethics.

With over 25 years of experience of training humans and dogs I’ll not only explain the HOW but the WHY your dog is doing certain behaviors in a way that’s easy to understand and apply. Plus, I’m the only person you’ll work with - this isn’t a franchise or a rotating staff.

I’ve titled dogs in agility (AKC, CPE, UKI), trained under world-class coaches, and live with three dogs—including a deaf Border Collie and a rescue with big feelings. I use proven, force-free methods and teach you how to train your dog with a clear, effective system.

If you want cookie-cutter training, I’m not your guy. But if you want real results and a better relationship with your dog, let’s talk.

🚶‍♂️ Do you offer training in public places like parks or stores?

Yes. My Out and About Training helps your dog learn to stay calm and focused in public places. We can train in parks, sidewalks, or pet-friendly stores to build real-world reliability

❓Isn’t my dog trying to be the alpha?

Nope — that’s a myth! The “pack leader” or “alpha dog” theory was based on outdated research on captive wolves in the 1940s. Later studies of wild wolves (and dogs) showed that they don’t behave that way at all. Dogs aren’t trying to dominate you — they’re just trying to figure out how to feel safe, get their needs met, and communicate the best they can.

The myth was popularized by a well-known TV personality, but modern dog behavior science has moved far beyond that. Today’s trainers use positive reinforcement to build cooperation, trust, and long-lasting results — no fear or force required.

❓Why is dog agility so hard to learn and train?

Dog agility looks fun (and it is!), but it takes precise teamwork between you and your dog. You’re not just running an obstacle course — you’re learning to communicate through movement, timing, body language, and cues, often at high speed.

Agility requires:

  • Solid foundations like focus, impulse control, and body awareness - your dog needs to perform in the presence of hundreds of other dogs - at CPE Agility Nationals there were over 800 dogs competing

  • Clear, consistent, and timely cues from the handler (that’s you!) while running for your life!

  • Split-second decisions and coordination - plus memorizing the entire course in 8 minutes

  • A dog that’s both physically and mentally engaged

It’s a great way to deepen your bond with your dog and build their confidence — just expect a learning curve and lots of laughter along the way!

📍 What areas do you serve for in-home dog training or private lessons?

I offer in-home dog training in Omaha, Gretna, Elkhorn, Bennington, Fremont, Valley, Bellevue, Waterloo and surrounding areas within about a 30-minute drive.

If you're outside that zone, I may still be able to help—travel beyond the core service area is available for an additional fee.

🐾 Can you help with leash pulling, jumping, or barking?

Absolutely. These are some of the most common issues I work with. My in-home training sessions are customized to address behaviors like leash pulling, overexcitement, barking, and jumping on guests.

Yes! I love crate training and it is one of the first things I teach—especially for puppies or new rescue dogs. I’ll show you how to make the crate a safe, comfortable space for your dog, not a punishment.

We’ll cover how to prevent crying, barking, or accidents in the crate, and how to build calm crate behavior that supports potty training, travel, and rest.

🐶📦 Do you offer help with crate training?

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your dog’s needs and your goals. Some clients see big improvements in just one or two sessions, while others prefer a full 5-session package for consistency and long-term results. My training process usually delivers near immediate results and I will give you the outline for a quick daily routine that will lessen the amount of sessions needed.

🧏 Can you train a deaf dog?

Yes. My blue Merle border collie Skye is deaf, and I specialize in deaf dog training using hand signals, body pressure, and visual cues. Deaf dogs are incredibly trainable with the right approach.

🧠 What’s included in a typical training session?

  • Personalized coaching based on your goals

  • My step-by-step communication system

  • Homework and follow-up guidance

  • Ongoing access for questions between sessions (optional add-on)
